Recap of the 2015 CrossFit Open

Now that the 2015 CrossFit Open season is over, I’ve had a chance this past Holy Week to quietly reflect on my performance and the performance of my athletes this season. A few things come to mind, am I fitter than I was last year? I would say so. Although I’m not thoroughly pleased with my overall performance, as I clearly phoned in some of those Open WODs; I was able to tackle 4 of the 5 WODs as prescribed. Clearly there’s a lot of work left to be done, especially in the skills department, but progress is progress. This was also my first time joining the CrossFit Open versus just the Manila Throwdown. Overall, I felt less pressure with the Open, and it seemed more like a competition against myself than against others. I’m not really that competitive when it comes to CrossFit, so this seemed more like my cup of tea.

..I can’t be any prouder that most of them finished all 5 WODs. I’ve seen their progress from barely being able to do a push up to racking up PRs at the end of every strength cycle. As a coach, this is all the motivation I need.

Most of the joys I’ve taken from this past season is in watching my athletes at CrossFit Ortigas tackle their first-ever CrossFit competition outside of the box. Most of them have 5 months of CF experience when the qualifiers started and I can’t be any prouder that most of them finished all 5 WODs. I’ve seen their progress from barely being able to do a push up to racking up PRs at the end of every strength cycle. As a coach, this is all the motivation I need. I can’t wait for next year, when they finally have a year of experience under their belt.

However, the most enjoyable part of this past season has been the CrossFit community around me. I’ve seen CF boxes take the initiative to open their doors and welcome us and others to use their equipment so we can finish this year’s Open season. With this type of hospitality, I’m convinced the future of CrossFit in this country is in good hands. I’m hopeful for bigger and better things next season, not just for myself, my coaches and my athletes in CrossFit Ortigas, but to all other CrossFit boxes in the country. WOD on!
